One thing I learned after more than 25 years of exploring the vast spectrum of electronic music is that one may have to do it with an open heart and an empty mind, with no preconceptions and no elitist point of views shaped by subgenres tag clouds, editorial rants and geo-political clashes.
This is how I discovered Rasul Gafarov aka Lenta through his releases at Shahr Farang, the Iranian record label he’s is co-running with Ahu. As tempted as I am to label Lenta’s sound as micro fill-in-the-blanks-with-something-ambient-experimental-related, well… I can’t. Maybe it’s something that reminds me of Jelinek. It’s like entering a dissociating world where the 4/4 pattern fill you with tension while the scarcity of the industrial harmonies. A unique listening experience for someone who needs something else.
So I decided to contact Rasul and see if I can get a grip of his musical universe. He instead gave me this sonic map: a 6 tracks selection acting like a bridge between acoustic and electronic. Just amazing. After you dive into Lenta’s selections, make sure you check his releases for Tape Hiss and eau régale.
