In an ocean of record selectors wannabees, stripped down of a unique personality, Switzerland’s Eli Verveine is like a breath of fresh air for more than 25 years. No matter the DJ set time or the club environment, she always delivers a warm feeling fuelled by deep house tones. The projects she has with Andrey Pushkarev or Gwenan come as a natural extension to her record selector Alter Ego, a rich identity shaped in years of crate digging around Europe. This is why we asked her to invite us into her private musical Universe, from where Eli revealed a few records, like a small appetiser.
A second hand dig I’m most proud of
Many years ago I had a mixtape of a local dj and this track was on it. I was constantly rewinding it just to listen to this one track. It was literally impossible to find any info about it. Years later, I was digging in a record store and…I just found it!! My heart almost skipped a beat! Nothing can beat this feeling!
Soul Capsule Prod. – Evolved
The record I’d love to see repressed
Various – MASK 500 – SKAM
The label I’d buy all their releases without even listening to them
The record artwork that blows my mind every time I look at it
“Blows my mind” would be an exaggeration, but I really love the artwork of: Various – The End Of The Beginning – PHONO LP 04 and also: 2 Lone Swordsmen – Stay Down – WARP LP 58
The record that triggers childhood memories
Neneh Cherry – Buffalo Stance
The record shop I would spend my whole savings in
I have to rephrase: the record store I SPENT my whole savings :) Unfortunately it had to close down in 2007. Still to date one of the best record stores I’ve ever seen. I’m so lucky to have worked there.
P45 in Zurich, Switzerland
The record that never leaves my DJ bag
This is such a favourite of mine. Since it came out it is a staple in my record bag. The other side is gorgeous too.
Pearson Sound – Thaw Cycle
Last record I bought for my home listening pleasure
I’m so inspired by all the ambient records of Lawrence.
Lawrence – Birds On The Playground
The record closest to my heart from my entire collection
Back in 2004 I bought the repress of this gem and it didn’t leave my recordbag for so many years. In fact, I didn’t feel safe not having it with me. Although I knew Mike for several years already, I never told him how much this track actually meant to me. And when I did one day, he told me that he is planning to repress it. When I bought the repress I found my name listed on the shout outs. This completely took me by surprise and I was so touched by it. May his beautiful soul rest in peace.
Precession – Sandcastle – Mike Huckaby Remix
When I think of deep house…
