Imposibil să nu te fi lovit măcar o dată de energia contagioasă marca Carl Cox, aruncată cu eleganță din minimum 4 deck-uri de pe care mixează în același timp.
Și anul acesta lui Carl Cox îi revine misiunea nobilă de a ghida finaliștii burn Residency spre o carieră unde recunoașterea internațională este doar vârful aisbergului, o carieră care începe cu 100.000 euro și o vară în Ibiza pentru câștigător!
Am avut ocazia unei discuții scurte și intense cu Mr. Carl Cox în care am povestit despre primii pași în carieră, despre importanța unui mentor dar și despre Ibiza!
What was the turning point in your career that put you on the track of global recognition?
1988 – I was doing an open air party in England, called Midsummer Night’s Dream. I had an early morning slot after all the big names. Basically I had to go out there and show people exactly what I was about. When I was playing on 3 turntables when most DJs were playing on 2 and the way I executed the mix on 3 turntables got people to hear something a little bit different than what they were hearing from all the other DJs. Everyone was dancing, going crazy, clapping and screaming. What they saw was a new DJ emerging and that was me. That moment was turning point to Carl Cox achieving global recognition and I didn’t look back from that moment
Did you have a mentor or a guide in your early years of DJing?
I never really had a mentor or a guide. I did enjoy a lot of american DJs, like Grandmaster Flesh, some Frankie Knuckles… I basically created my own path to who I am today, it was about what I could do and achieve on. What I was chasing was to be seen as someone that was creative above & beyond anyone else. So, it would be nice to have that one person and say “Yes, you’re the one!” but unfortunatelly I couldn’t find that one so I had to go with myself to become the person I am today!
1 artist you’re proud of successfully guiding his or her career into the DJing scene
Over the last 5 years: Nicole Moudaber. When I first got to meet her, she was very humble yet her music got my attention… And then I got to see her playing, she was AMAZING. She wasn’t really known that much back then but then 1 year DJ Mag nominated me again as a top DJ from a techno point of view. They asked me what DJ is going to be really good in the next 1 or 2 years and I said that a really underestimated DJ is Nicole Moudaber… and you can see where Nicole is today… she’s a superstar! She can take over any club, she makes her own music, she absolutely rocks everything at the moment. I didn’t really mentor her in but a little guidance showed her the way a little bit :)
Can you imagine a clubbing scene without Ibiza?
I think so, yes, because people make the party no matter what! If it wasn’t Ibiza, it would be Barcelona or San Sebastian or Malaga. Yet, we are lucky to have such an island with such a great spirit!
Could I imagine my life without Ibiza? No! But if we didn’t have it we would find an alternative!
